What is Naturopathic Medicine?

Girl in Pain In Need of Wellness Support

Modern medical care saves countless lives but is not a complete solution for the thousands of people struggling with chronic conditions. The modern medical model particularly falls short for complicated or vague symptoms.

Naturopathic medicine is a more holistic approach that takes into account each person’s unique biochemistry and lifestyle. We seek to identify the root cause of illness and support health in the least invasive way possible.

Accreditation

Naturopathic medicine is a distinct healthcare profession that is regulated by federal accreditation and state licensing boards. In order to become licensed, naturopathic doctors (NDs) must graduate from an accredited four-year program and pass a licensing board exam.

The scope of naturopathic practice varies greatly among states. In some states, NDs are recognized as specialists. They can order laboratory tests, diagnose disease, do injectable therapy, and prescribe medications including hormones. NDs can also prescribe hormone therapy (HT).

Even though NDs have the authority to prescribe medications, they opt for more natural therapies whenever possible. Nutrition, herbs, supplements, and lifestyle changes are the foundations of naturopathic medicine.

The Healing Power of Nature

Naturopathic therapies are specifically designed to support the body’s inherent self-healing process. When the body self-heals, the results are lasting.

Treat the Cause

Naturopathic medicine goes beyond symptom management. We seek to identify the root cause of illness. Instead of covering up symptoms like a band-aid, this approach leads to genuine health.

Treat the Whole Person

The modern medical model segments care among specialists. The naturopathic model looks at how all of the body systems interact. This approach minimizes confusion and streamlines your care.

Prevention is the Best Medicine

Many people experience vague or nonspecific symptoms before they ever develop a disease that can be diagnosed. Naturopathic medicine takes these subtle cues seriously. Preventing illness is always easier than reversing complex disease.

Doctor as Teacher

Naturopathic medicine is a collaborative approach that includes you, the patient, in the process. You will learn to understand your body and its unique needs. When you are invested in your own health, you’ll achieve better results.

Do No Harm

The therapeutic order guides which interventions should be used and in what order. Naturopathic doctors are trained to use the least invasive therapies (like lifestyle medicine) first and then the most invasive (like medications and surgery) as a last resort.
